Race against Time
Do you ever get the feeling that time is moving too quickly? That with every passing year, so goes another chance to realise the aspirations you’ve harboured for so long?
Do you ever think that you just don’t have the time to achieve the things you’re capable of, or become the person you know you really are? Would you admit that you’re being held back by fear, self-doubt, other people’s opinions or religious ideology?
If so, you are not alone.
For a number of years I was held back by the same distractions. I felt unfulfilled and constantly frustrated; life was a chore and felt like nothing more than a rat race. I found myself living to please others rather than myself. But once I got into pastoral ministry and gained a privileged insight into the lives of other people, it quickly became apparent that my frustrations were not unique. In the many years I’ve been pastoring, I have not come across anyone who hasn’t had to grapple with one or more of these contentions in pursuing a meaningful life.
Fortunately, those that have taken the trouble to address their challenges have successfully overcome them!
The trouble, however, is that whilst we dither over dealing with these hang-ups, time is still moving, and relentlessly at that.
Moses captures the problem perfectly in Psalms chapter 90 when he writes:
“The length of our days is seventy years— or eighty, if we have the strength; yet their span is but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away.… teach us to number our days aright that we may gain a heart of wisdom.’ – Psalm 90: 10 & 12
He reflects upon the brevity of human life and the fears, stresses and strains that accompany it; he too finds himself at a loss to deal with the problem of time, trouble and sorrow – the same challenges many of us are contending with today, more than two thousand years later.
Of course the reality is that time neither speeds up nor slows down. It’s us that fluctuate. When fear, self-doubt, peer pressure and the daily pressures of life; work, college, church, family and financial burdens, press us on every side we lose ground and we’re left sprinting to stand still.
Under such relentless demands it becomes hard to focus and channel our time and energy into the things that we really want to do. The things we regard as being most important to pursuing our purpose or destiny.
Rocking Chair Regret
So what’s the solution?
Well, let’s first consider the implications of getting this wrong. Fast forward yourself to old age, perched on a garden rocking chair contemplating your life as it comes toward its end. You sit there, with a tired and glazed look in your eyes wondering what might or should’ve been, but completely unable to do anything about it. Your potential has gone untapped and you failed to live true to the real you, and now life’s opportunities have firmly passed you by.
This is what I call ‘rocking chair regret’; and it’s something I don’t ever want to feel.
I would rather try and fail than regret what might have been in my old age; how about you?
Fortunately, Moses illuminates both the problem and solution in the very same prayer. He asks God to help us to ‘number our days aright that we may gain a heart of wisdom’. To number means to ‘assign’, ‘plan’ or ‘prioritise’ – therefore, ‘numbering our days aright’ simply means to plan and prioritise our time on earth accurately and productively –consistent with our true identity, values and purpose.
To ‘gain a heart of wisdom’ means to gain ‘prudence’, ‘foresight’ and ‘self-control’. To make the most of our lives therefore, we have to see things as they really are, not through the filter of fear. Then we need the self-control to rise-above all the things that would dare to hold us back.
And that’s what ‘Flying with Time’ is all about; empowering you. Empowering you to:
➢ Break free from all the constraints of self-doubt, peer pressure and religious dogma
➢ Identify your unique purpose in life
➢ ‘Number your days’ in such a way that you harness your time and learn to fly with it!
Flying with Time is for anyone tired of their status-quo. If you want to unveil your true, authentic identity without feeling ashamed or apologetic, then I’m imploring you to use this manual and apply its principles to your life.
Enough is enough; it’s your turn to fly.
